LOCAL HISTORY OF NEWSPAPER (by NCAA PH)

1811 – first Philippine newspaper (El Superior Govierno); published with the Spanish Governor General himself as editor.

1846 – first daily newspaper (La Esperanza); catered to the Spanish elite

Diario de Manila, was suppressed by the Governor General after 38 years of publication, allegedly for inciting the Filipinos to rebel against the Spaniards.

1893 – first publication for and by women (El Ilocano)

1889 – La Solidaridad, the mouthpiece of the revolution and the fortnightly organ of the Propaganda Movement

1898 – La Independencia; was the most widely read newspaper of the revolution.

1898 – The Manila Times; published by American journalists

1898 – Official Gazette

1920 – The Philippine Herald, a pro-Filipino newspaper

Manila Tribune, Taliba, and La Vanguardia were allowed to publish under regular censorship by the Japanese Imperial Army.

1945-1972 – the golden age of Philippine Journalism from post-war to pre-martial law era

1952 – National Press Club was organized “to promote cooperation among journalists and uphold press freedom and the dignity of journalists”

1964 – Philippine Press Institute (PPI) was organized “to foster the development and improvement of journalism in the country”

Newspaper served many functions including providing a daily chronicle of events, serving as a political organ and promoting free speech.

It also served as important historical sources, both primary and secondary, for scholars of all disciplines, librarians, teachers, students, and genealogists, to name only a few groups who have perused their content looking for relevant material to answer their research questions.

The term newspaper owner means “any person who owns or controls directly, or indirectly through separate or subsidiary corporations, one or more newspaper publications.”

 

TYPES OF NEWSPAPER

  • National Dailies – large circulations and significant social and political impact
  • Hometown newspapers – published at least three times a week, Circulation of big city; Zoned editions – suburban or regional versions of the paper
  • Alternative and Weekly Newspaper – most commonly a weekly and available at no cost

  • What kind of article are you looking at? Is it a news story, an editorial, an opinion piece, or an advertisement?
  • What is the main point of the story? Does the headline and the lead support the main point of the story?
  • Has the story answered the questions of Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How?
  • What evidence supports the main point of the story? What evidence has been verified? How was it verified? What evidence has not been verified? Is the evidence direct or indirect?
  • What kind of sources are cited in the article? Are they reliable? How do you know?
  • Does the journalist/reporter/news source make their work transparent? How does the editorial board, the publisher, and the advertising department work together? Does the paper have a code of ethics?
